Some of our Favorite Management Articles and Reports
- Transformation and Redesign at the White House Communications Agency by March Laree Jacques. Originally published by the American Society for Quality in the Quality Management Journal, Volume 6, Issue 3, 1999.
- Remembering NUMMI by Gipsie Ranney, 2009. A discussion of the partnership between Toyota and General Motors to run a automobile plant in California.
- Control Charting Seasonal Data by Lynda Finn, 2009. How to create a control chart for seasonal or trending data where there is an underlying structural variation in the data. Essentially you need to account for the structural variation to create the control limits for the control chart.
- Using Quality to Develop an Internet Resource by John Hunter, 1999. The article provides guidance to help those responsible for managing the application of internet technology to improve the performance of organizations.
- Understanding Variation by Tom Nolan and Lloyd Provost, 1990. To improve performance understanding the causes of variation is critical. Successful improvement strategies depend on whether special or common causes of variation are the target of improvement.
- The Small Business Guidebook to Quality Management by the Office of the Secretary of Defense Quality Management Office, 1993. Excellent Guidebook for those who have made a commitment to change. Best for those that already understand that the typical behavior of our organizations has room for improvement (not likely to convince someone who doesn't want to change but for those that want to make real changes it is a great resource). Over 50 pages.
- Doing More With Less in the Public Sector: A Progress Report from Madison, Wisconsin by William Hunter, Jan O'Neill, and Carol Wallen, 1986 (new quality improvement ideas can help public officials combat the effects of decreasing budgets just as they help private businesses increase productivity).
- In the Beginning, There Were Deming and Juran by Phil Landesberg, 1999. Originally published in the Journal of Quality and Participation. A nice (very short) look back on the lives and ideas of Deming and Juran with the aim of encouraging us to learn from their work.
- 101 Ways to Design an Experiment, or Some Ideas About Teaching Design of Experiments by William G. Hunter, 1975. A great article sharing ideas on teaching and learning about Design of Experiments (DoE), a powerful and greatly under-utilized tool. 6 sigma efforts have greatly increased the use of DoE.
